In order to understand how incredible hemp is at supporting pets, it’s helpful to gain a basic overview of what it actually is.

One common question pet parents ask us about our CBD or CBG products is: “Will these make my pet high?” The answer is: NO! All Primal Pets Supplements are derived from the hemp plant—which does not contain enough of the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, to cause the feeling of being “high”.

Marijuana and hemp are part of the group of plants called cannabis. While “marijuana” and “cannabis” are often used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. Both marijuana and hemp are derived from the cannabis plant, but the key difference is in the levels of THC content each contains. Marijuana generally refers to cannabis or cannabis products that contain larger amounts of THC. 

• Marijuana is any cannabis plant with MORE than 0.3% THC, although most marijuana plants contain much higher concentrations of THC. THC is the cannabinoid that creates the typical psychoactive (“high”) effect associated with marijuana.
• Marijuana is not federally legal and is not used in Primal Pets Supplements.
• Hemp is any cannabis plant with LESS than 0.3% THC. The strains of hemp we use have high amounts of other beneficial cannabinoids like CBD and CBG.
• Hemp IS federally legal and is what we use in our health supplements.

Hemp Supplements Support Pets’ Endocannabinoid System

So, how exactly do hemp supplements support our pets’ bodies? The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an internal signaling system in animal bodies that communicates balance, or homeostasis. Hemp produces exocannabinoids that our pets’ bodies can recognize and use! Scientists started noticing and researching the ECS within the last 60 years or so, making the benefits of hemp products a relatively new discovery.

The hemp plant naturally creates exocannabinoids (cannabinoids from an external source) which your pet’s ECS recognizes and can use.
